10km and 5km Peace Runs cancelled?

Due to COVID restrictions, we were sadly required to cancel the 5km and 10km Peace Runs. All runners who have already entered will receive a full refund. The good news is that these events will take place in virtual format. More details to follow soon.

What about Covid?

In order to reduce the risk of COVID -19 transmission, all runners and crew will undergo the COVID-19 Antigen test:

  • Covid tests will be in a 72hour window before the race,
  • The COVID-19 Antigen testing is non-invasive and will be available within 15 minutes,
  • Testing will be free of charge,
  • Testing will be compulsory and will be done at Cape Town Stadium, and
  • Runners will need to undergo the testing before entering the expo space and collecting race numbers.

What are the entry fee costs, for South African athletes, and what does it include?

42.2km Marathon

Licensed Runners – R370
Includes race entry, timing chip, T-shirt and Goodie Bag

Unlicensed Runners – R440
Includes race entry, temporary license, timing chip, T-shirt and Goodie Bag

22km Cape Town Trail Run
R1200 - Includes race entry, SANParks entry fee, T-shirt and Goodie Bag

When is the closing date for entries?

All entries will close at midnight on 17 September, or when the maximum entry limit has been reached for each event.

Are there limited entry numbers?

42.2k Road Marathon entries are limited to 12,000 entries

22km Cape Town Trail - SANPark limit of 500

46km Cape Town Trail Marathon by Ryan Sandes - SANPark limit of 500

Which entries are closed?

Entries for the 22km have already closed, as the maximum entry limit has been reached.

Who qualifies as a South African entrant?

South African participants are classified as all runners who have a South African ID number.

Can I enter as a permanent resident in South Africa?

If you are a permanent, or temporary resident, with a valid permit, you can email a copy of this, with a copy of your passport, to raceoffice@capetownmarathon.com, and you will be issued with a promo voucher code to allow you to enter as a South African resident.

If the race is cancelled due to the ongoing Pandemic, do I get a refund?

Yes, if the race is cancelled due to the ongoing Pandemic all runners will receive a full refund.

Upgrades and downgrade deadlines?

Upgrades and downgrades will be permitted until 1 September 2021 only, or earlier if entry limits have been reached in a particular distance.

Can I downgrade to the 22km Cape Town Trail Marathon?

Unfortunately not, entries are closed as the race is full.

How to upgrade or downgrade?

1. Enter your new distance first, to ensure you stay in the first-come, first-run guarantee facility, and
2. Email support@howler.co.za requesting a refund for the old distance after the new entry has been purchased

Substitutions, how and when?

1. Substitutions will be allowed until 1 September 2021 only, and

2. Please email raceoffice@capetownmarathon.com for information on how this process works.

How do I update my registration information?

If you need to update any of your registration information, including updating your license number if you are a club athlete:

1. Log into your Howler account,
2. Click on Tickets,
3. Click on the 3 dots on the right-hand side, and
4. Click on Edit Registration.

What are the event age limits?

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon events have the following age restrictions for South African runners, as specified by ASA, on the day of the race – these are:

42.2km Marathon - 20 years old
22km Trail - 18 years old
46km Trail - 18 years old

42.2km Sanlam Cape Town Marathon – 06h00

Can my dog or pet join me on my run?

No animals are allowed at any of the events.

46km Cape Town Trail Marathon – 10 hours
22km Cape Town Trail Run – 5 hours
42.2km Sanlam Cape Town Marathon – 6.5 hours

Do I need to be registered with a club?

No, you do not need to be a member of a registered club, any individual can enter and run as an unlicensed athlete. You will however need to purchase a temporary license.

How do I update my registration information?

How are the races timed?

The Trail runs are timed on a gun to mat basis.

The 42km Marathon is timed using two systems:
1. Gun to the mat for prize money and position, and
2. Mat to mat for qualifiers for other races (net time).

Changes to the start of the Marathon:

  1. The Start will move from Beach Road to Fritz Sonnenberg Road, with participants joining their start batches on the Cape Town Stadium Forecourt.
  2. A staggered start will see runners setting off in seeded batched groups of 300, allowing for ample social distancing, every minute between 06h15 and 06h50.
  3. Seeding will be based on past race results, not limited to the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon.
