It is with both sadness and gratitude that the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon announces that Barry Van Blerk, our Race Director, will be leaving the event at the end of December 2024. Barry’s unwavering commitment, inspirational leadership, and ability to bring people together have been instrumental in guiding the marathon through one of its most significant milestones—successfully passing Stage 1 of the Abbott World Marathon Majors assessment. His ability to foster collaboration among our sponsors, service providers, and dedicated team has left an indelible mark on the culture and legacy of this event.
Reflecting on his time with the Cape Town Marathon, Barry Van Blerk shared: “Being Race Director of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has been an incredible journey. Over the past two years, we’ve worked hard as a team to reach key milestones, especially passing Stage 1 of the Abbott World Marathon Majors assessment. It’s been rewarding to see the event grow and evolve, and I’m proud to have played a part in its success. The progress we’ve made reflects the strength of the entire team, and I have no doubt that the marathon will continue to thrive in the years ahead.”
Clark Gardner, CEO of Faces, praised Barry’s contributions with heartfelt words: “Barry’s leadership has not only elevated the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon to new heights but has also enriched the culture of teamwork and excellence that defines this event. While it’s hard to say goodbye to someone who has become such a cherished part of our marathon & Faces family for many years, we are immensely grateful for the legacy Barry leaves behind—a strong foundation, a clear path forward, and a team that continues to excel. Barry’s passion and dedication have shaped this marathon in ways that will resonate for years to come. We wish him nothing but success as he embarks on this new chapter in his career.”
As we bid farewell to Barry, we also look ahead with optimism. We will announce new reporting lines for the event in early 2025, ensuring the continued success and growth of Africa’s only Abbott World Marathon Majors candidate. Barry’s impact will remain deeply woven into the fabric of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, a race that thrives on the passion, energy, and unity of everyone involved.
