Marathon innovation: a flatter and faster route coming your way
Renata Bossi | Mar. 08, 2023The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon strives to constantly innovate our portfolio of events to ensure the best possible experience for participants. Our Abbotts World Marathon Majors Candidate marathon route is front and centre of this innovation, therefore we aim to continue pleasing our runner’s experience by making improvements to the route.
The 2023 Marathon route modification sees the removal of the District Six hill; reducing the race profile’s total ascent and ensuring flatter and faster running to achieve your marathon personal best. Furthermore, improving the flow of traffic and participant logistics on race day has been front of mind while deciding on route upgrades for 2023.
The Start has been moved back to Fritz Sonnenberg Road following the completion of civil works for last month’s Formula E event, which included road widening and the removal of speed bumps. Our blue carpet Finish line has moved back to Vlei Road, shrouded by the support of spectators in the grandstands and adjacent Hospitality areas.
“Not only do the desired route upgrades alleviate stress on traffic, but they also take into consideration the feedback of our marathon runners. We have heard your requests for a flatter and faster route, and are excited to action these improvements in 2023,” noted Race Director, Barry van Blerk.
Beat your PB at this year’s race, and join the race to become Africa’s 1st Major.
*All route changes are subject to the final approval of the City of Cape Town.
