As marathoners, we know that the path to success isn’t always straight—sometimes it’s filled with hills, twists, and unexpected turns. Of course, there’s those sneaky cut off points along the way too. But with every stride, we get closer to our goal. In 2024, we reached a huge milestone on the road to becoming Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Majors event: we passed Stage 1 – “our first cut off” – successfully. It wasn’t easy. It took commitment, collaboration, and a collective effort from all corners of Cape Town and beyond. But, we did it. Together.
However, as every runner knows, getting past a cut off point isn’t the finish. It’s just the next step in a race that demands endurance, resilience, and a constant drive to improve. Now, we turn our focus to Stage 2 of our assessment.

What’s Ahead? The Road to Passing Stage 2
If we’ve learned anything from our marathon journey so far, it’s that achieving a dream is never about running solo. It’s about pushing forward as one, with every participant, supporter, and partner playing their part. Our next phase will require us to tighten a few laces and sharpen our focus on three key areas.
- No Parked Cars
Last year, with the support of our incredible residents, we cleared the route—no parked cars in sight. It was a magical moment that showed what a community can achieve when we work together.
This year, we’re doing it again. When Cape Town becomes a Major, you’ll be able to look back and remember that your small act—moving that car—played a part in making it happen. - Elevating the Elite Field
To join the Abbott World Marathon Majors, we need to raise the bar by bringing in top-tier athletes. For Stage 2, that means at least 4 Platinum Label and 6 Gold Label Status runners in Cape Town. It’s a challenge, but we’re all in.
We’ve committed to expanding our budget to attract the world’s best. We also know that while the elite athletes bring fierce competition, they do so much more—they draw eyes from across the globe, shining a spotlight on Africa. - Managing the Crowd Flow
The heartbeat of a marathon is its runners, but it’s also the supporters, spectators, families, and friends who cheer us on. With 2025 bringing more participants, we must ensure smooth, safe crowd flow on and off the course.
To handle this, we’re expanding park & ride options and working with the city to use the metro rail, ensuring everyone can get to the start line, and home, easily. It’s a big task, but every step we take to improve race day brings us closer to a collective victory. We want runners empowered, spectators excited, and our city proud.
Our Journey Together: #YouDoCount
“Barry’s leadership has left a lasting legacy, and I’m proud to step forward as General Manager, confident that with our amazing team and passionate community, we’ll continue pushing towards our dream of Africa’s first Major,” says Liz Kruger, the Cape Town Marathon’s new General Manager.
This journey to Stage 2 is one we’re all on together. Whether you’re running, supporting, or volunteering, your role is essential. You’re not just part of the race—you are the race. With your passion and energy, we’re writing this story together. When we cross that finish line, we’ll know we did it as a community, making history and achieving greatness together.
