Your Major: A Collective Victory in the Making

Kendra Stewart |  May. 05, 2025

What does it take to become an Abbott World Marathon Major? Some might point to elite fields, flawless logistics, and global recognition. And they wouldn’t be wrong. But if you ask us, the real answer is simpler, and more powerful. It takes all of us.

That’s why we’re proud to launch Your Major, a new video series that shines a light on some of the faces behind this journey. These are the runners, partners, volunteers, supporters, and visionaries who’ve helped shape our race into what it is today: a bold, beautiful, community-powered pursuit of bringing Africa her 1st Major.

But, these videos are just the start. The truth is, four video reels can’t possibly capture the full scale of what this race means, or the incredible depth of the people behind it. When we say Your Major, we mean it. Each and every one of you who has been along for the journey deserves our heartfelt gratitude.

We mean the route marshals and water table volunteers handing out refreshments with steady hands and big smiles. The residents, who cleared the streets and parked elsewhere for the day so athletes could run freely. The security teams and medics who stood guard to keep us safe. The friends and family cheering with pride at the finish line, and all along the route too. The families who sacrificed time so their loved ones could train. Our partners who believed in this dream before the world did. The supporters who tracked athletes from halfway across the globe. The city staff who stayed up late to plan road closures and clean-up crews. The photographers who caught the emotion in every stride. The Clubs and Crews who rallied thousands of runners to the start line, and the teams who sacrificed weekends to host much-needed training runs for the community.

That’s who makes a Major. That’s who makes this Major.

Because this isn’t just a race. It’s a movement. It’s a shared effort. It’s Africa standing tall on a global stage and saying: we belong here. We’re ready. And we’ve done the work together.

As we continue toward Stage 2 of our Abbott World Marathon Majors candidacy, the spotlight may grow brighter, but it will never shine on just one person. It will shine on an entire community. And, when we earn that final recognition, when we become Africa’s first Major, it won’t be the finish line. It will be a collective victory, a shared breath held and finally released, a celebration for every person who played their part.

Because this story was never just about running. This is Your Story.
This is Your (soon to be) Major.
