This year the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon sold out faster than ever before. While that’s a milestone worth celebrating, it’s also brought a few unexpected challenges. With increased demand has come a noticeable rise in fraudulent ticket sales, and we’ve heard the community loud and clear: you want a safer, more secure way to exchange entries.
We couldn’t agree more.
That’s why we’re excited to introduce Howler’s official resale system. This function offers a safe and secure way to sell your ticket, if your ticket is for a distance that has officially sold out. It also provides a trusted option for others who are still looking to buy a valid entry for a distance that has sold out.
We recommend using this feature to ensure a protected transaction for sellers and buyers.
The resell option will be available until 29 August 2025, unless closed earlier at our discretion or based on operational needs.
- This is not the same as a ticket transfer. Transfers allow you to send your ticket directly to someone and that option remains available.
- Resale puts a ticket into a general pool where it can be bought by anyone browsing the event on Howler. You won’t know who purchased it – you’ll simply receive payment if it sells.
- Resale is only available for sold-out distances, currently: 11km Trail, 22km Trail & 42.2km Marathon.
- Tickets can only be sold at face value (the original price you paid) – reselling above the original price is not possible.
- Payment for a sold ticket is processed securely within 14 days after the sale.
- Tickets that are not eligible for resale include promo (free) tickets, and any distances not sold out yet.
How to list your ticket for Resale
- Log in to your Howler account and go to Tickets.
- Find the ticket you want to sell and click the three dots on the right.
- Select Sell Ticket. Some information will come up – select Continue.
- Tickets can only be sold for the original full price.
- Enter your banking details and double-check these carefully. Incorrect info means you’ll need to remove and relist your ticket.
- Once your ticket is listed for resale, you can remove it anytime (if it hasn’t been purchased – see below for this process).
- A small transaction fee applies to both the buyer and the seller.
- If your ticket sells, you’ll get an email confirmation, and it will disappear from your Howler account.
- Your ticket stays listed until it’s sold, or resale is disabled by the organiser.
How to remove your ticket from Resale
- Go to Tickets in your Howler account.
- Click the three dots on the ticket that you listed for resale.
- Select Remove from Resale.
- If someone has the ticket in their cart, you’ll need to wait for them to abandon the purchase or for their order session to expire.
- Once removed from resale, the ticket will reappear back in your Howler account.
How to buy a Resale ticket
If someone lists their ticket for resale, it will automatically appear on the event page on Howler.
- Go to the event landing page on Howler.
- Look for the Buy Resale Ticket button. It appears separately from the standard Enter Now option.
- If resale tickets are available, they will appear as options under Available resale tickets.
- Add the resale ticket of your choice to your cart and proceed to checkout as usual.
- Once your payment is complete, the ticket will be added to your Howler account and emailed to you.
